Figs anyone?

John 1:12

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”

Now, what do ya’ll reckon about this parable?

Matthew 21:18-22

Early in the morning, as he was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.

When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

At first I thought the above passage was all about believing in God and trusting in Him. You know, pray and you shall receive sort of stuff…. Now I realise that there is more to it than that. We are to be like the trees that bear good fruit of the spirit.

Matthew 3:10

“The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Look at it this way. We are all sinners, saved by Grace etc, etc…we either choose to receive Him and follow Him, or we don’t. Simple.  If we receive Him we are like a fig tree who bears fruit. Green leaves, strong branches, yummy fruit and less likely to be cursed by Jesus! If we choose not to receive Him we are like the fig tree in the above  passage. We will never bear fruit, let alone tasty fruit and we will wither, wither, wither.

Wow! I didn’t know fig trees we THAT big!

I know there is an element of needing to push through, past our flesh, overcoming temptations etc, to bear the image of Christ. In other words, that we need to make right decisions (which is practising righteousness) etc, etc, but I was thinking as I read you post about this:

If we are indeed His children, and we seek to be more like Him, and follow His ways… then His very Spirit within us, will birth the character and nature of Christ, because we now have His genetics within us… and we will then start to reflect our Father’s characteristics. What child doesn’t resemble their Father to some degree or another?? Amen! I want to look a lot like my Father lol. Long ways to go though :S I look more like a cactus tree on most days Wink

ps. I didn’t know you had a blog… I have enjoyed reading your thoughts Grin
